Definition
Web doubling refers to the process in nonwoven production of combining and superimposing at least two individual web layers to form a multilayer assembly. The objective is to achieve the desired basis weight, thickness, and uniformity of the final product, since individual webs from a card or web former are often too light or nonuniform. Deliberate cross-lapping of the layers allows the mechanical properties — particularly tensile strength in multiple directions — to be specifically controlled. The doubled web assembly is subsequently consolidated by processes such as needlepunching, calendering, or thermal bonding.
Use in the textile industry
Web doubling is used in the production of technical nonwovens for filters, geotextiles, and insulation batts, where defined basis weights and high uniformity are required. Cross-lapping during web doubling enables isotropic strength properties, which is relevant for applications such as automotive interior components and needle-punched felts. The process also allows different fiber types or webs with varying properties to be combined within a single assembly.
