Definition
The warp beam is a cylindrical device flanged on both sides by disk-shaped flanges, onto which the warp ends of a woven fabric are wound in parallel and at uniform tension. It serves as a storage supply for the warp and delivers the ends in a controlled manner to the shed during the weaving process. The flange disks prevent lateral displacement of the yarn layers and ensure uniform yarn tension across the full fabric width.
Use in the textile industry
The warp beam is prepared in the weaving preparatory department by warping and subsequent beaming, then mounted into the weaving machine. Depending on the weaving machine type and fabric style, warp beams are made of steel or aluminum; diameter and flange spacing are determined by the required warp length and width. In practice, a distinction is made between the weaver's beam, which is installed directly into the machine, and the section beam (or warper's beam), which may be used as an intermediate stage during beaming.
