Definition
Vector protection refers to the property of textiles that prevents or substantially reduces contact between the wearer and vectors — organisms such as insects or mites that can transmit pathogens. This is achieved through the mechanical barrier effect of the fabric (tight construction, small mesh opening) and/or through the application of insecticidal or repellent finishes incorporated into or onto the textile fiber. The goal is to prevent bites or body contact with potentially disease-transmitting arthropods, thereby reducing the risk of infection.
Use in the textile industry
In occupational safety and outdoor apparel, woven fabrics with tight weave structures and permanent or wash-resistant insecticidal finishes are used — for example, in protective clothing for tropical regions or in military apparel. Bed nets, sleeping bags, and tent materials are also treated with vector-protective finishes to reduce the incidence of malaria, dengue, and other vector-borne diseases. Both the mechanical fabric construction and the wash durability of the active-ingredient finish play a central role in ensuring long-term protective performance.
