Definition
The textile chain describes the complete production and value-creation process of a textile product from raw material to finished consumer goods. It encompasses all upstream and downstream stages: fiber extraction or manufacture, spinning, weaving or knitting, fabric formation, finishing (e.g., dyeing, chemical finishing, coating), as well as garment manufacturing and distribution. Each stage of the textile chain is closely linked to the preceding and following stages, so that the quality, cost, and sustainability characteristics of the final product are largely determined by the interaction of all chain members. In modern usage, the term also includes the use phase and the disposal or recycling of the textile, allowing the textile chain to be understood as an extended life-cycle model.
Use in the textile industry
In the textile industry, the concept of the textile chain serves as an analytical and management framework for coordinating material flows, quality assurance processes, and supplier relationships across multiple production stages. It is particularly relevant in the areas of traceability, compliance with social and environmental standards, and assessment of a product's ecological footprint. In addition, the term is used in supply chain optimization — for example, to reduce lead times or to mitigate raw material risks through alternative sourcing.
