Tensile strength designates the maximum tensile force that a textile material or yarn can withstand before rupture occurs. It is expressed either as force per cross-sectional area or as an absolute force in newtons and is determined under defined test conditions. Tensile strength is a key mechanical property and describes the resistance of a material to failure under uniaxial tensile loading.
Use in the textile industry
In the textile industry, tensile strength is tested during quality assurance of yarns, woven fabrics, and technical textiles to ensure adequate mechanical load-bearing capacity. It is particularly relevant for high-performance textiles such as protective clothing, belts, ropes, and geotextiles that are permanently subjected to high tensile forces. This property is incorporated into material selection and product development to guarantee sufficient serviceability.
