Definition
Technical textiles are textile materials and products developed and used primarily according to functional and technical criteria, not according to aesthetic or apparel-related considerations. They include fibers, yarns, fabric structures, and composite materials that exhibit specific properties such as high tensile strength, resistance to chemicals, heat, or mechanical stress. Their fields of application extend across numerous industries outside the conventional textile and apparel industry, including construction, medicine, transportation engineering, and environmental engineering.
Use in the textile industry
Technical textiles are used, for example, as geotextiles for soil stabilization and drainage in civil engineering, as filter media in process engineering, and as reinforcement structures in fiber-reinforced composites. In the medical field, they are used as implants, wound dressings, and sterile drape materials. In addition to mechanical load-bearing capacity, decisive properties frequently include defined pore sizes, chemical inertness, or specific behavior under conditions of moisture and temperature.
