Definition
Suspended particulates are fine solid or liquid particles dispersed in a gaseous or liquid medium that do not settle, or settle only very slowly, due to their small size and low mass. They are generated in industrial processes by mechanical comminution, friction, combustion, or chemical reactions. Depending on particle size, density, and medium viscosity, they behave according to the laws of fluid mechanics and can be removed from the carrier medium by filtration, sedimentation, or electrostatic precipitation.
Use in the textile industry
In the textile industry, suspended particulates occur primarily in spinning and weaving operations as fiber dust and lint released during the mechanical processing of natural and man-made fibers. In textile finishing, suspended particulates are present in process water and wastewater — for example as dye particles or pigment residues from dyeing and printing processes — and must be separated before discharge into wastewater treatment systems. Suspended particulate filters also play a role in the compressed-air supply of textile machinery, protecting equipment components from particulate abrasion.
