Smart textiles, also referred to as intelligent textiles, are fabric structures that acquire new functionality through the integration and implementation of microelectronics and sensor technology. This enables the production of garments that can, for example, heat the wearer's body or emit light signals by means of embroidered or sewn-in conductive filaments. Smart textiles can also monitor body functions during physical activity and transmit this data to a device such as a smartphone. Conductive threads are among the materials used for this purpose.
Use in the textile industry
Smart textiles are used in the textile industry in areas including sportswear, medical technology, and protective clothing. Typical applications include biometric monitoring of vital signs, the integration of heating elements into workwear and outdoor clothing, and the incorporation of luminous elements into high-visibility protective garments. Key requirements for such textiles are wash resistance, flexibility, and compatibility of the embedded electronics with textile manufacturing processes.
