Definition
Scuff resistance is the ability of a textile fabric to withstand mechanical wear caused by repeated rubbing against another surface. The stress acts on the fibers, yarns, or fabric structure, which can result in fiber breakage, pilling, surface changes, or complete wear-through. Scuff resistance is an essential mechanical performance property of textiles and is determined using standardized test methods in which a specimen is subjected to a defined pressure and a specified number of rubbing cycles.
Use in the textile industry
Scuff resistance is particularly relevant for textiles exposed to severe mechanical stress during use, such as upholstery fabrics, protective workwear, outdoor and sportswear, and technical textiles such as straps or cover materials. For furniture upholstery, it is a key quality characteristic, since seating areas are subjected to heavy stress through repeated sitting and standing. Scuff resistance is also used in the evaluation of workwear and uniforms to assess their service life and functional reliability in use.
