Roving

Definition

A bundle or strand of parallel, continuous filaments. Rovings are used primarily in the production of fiber-reinforced plastics.

Use in the textile industry

Rovings made from glass, carbon, or aramid fibers are used in the textile industry and in the composites sector as a feedstock for woven fabrics, non-crimp fabrics, and filament winding structures. They can be processed directly in resin impregnation systems or further converted into yarns and twisted threads. Their uniform fiber alignment enables high load transfer in the longitudinal direction, making them particularly suitable for structural applications.

A yarn consists of fibers that are twisted or plied together, creating a cohesive structure, whereas a roving is an untwisted bundle of parallel continuous filaments with no significant twist. The absence of twist makes a roving less flexible to handle, but it allows for straighter fiber alignment and thus higher mechanical performance in composite materials.
