Definition
The Walzenstuhl (roller frame) is, like the Rösschenstuhl, a design variant of the hand flat knitting frame. The Walzenstuhl incorporates a higher proportion of wooden components and was the common construction type in Saxony. The Rösschenstuhl was a design originating from France.
Use in the textile industry
The Walzenstuhl was used in artisanal knitting production, particularly for the manufacture of stockings and flat knitted fabrics. As a regional construction type of Saxony, it was widely used in the knitting and hosiery workshops of that region. Its higher proportion of wooden parts made it well suited for production using locally available materials and artisanal skills, and facilitated maintenance and repair.
