Definition
Comb-like part of a loom. It guides the weft to the already woven fabric and compacts it. The reed determines the density of the woven fabric depending on the sett and the material of the warp.
Use in the textile industry
The reed is used in industrial and artisanal weaving to evenly compact the weft insertions and to control fabric density. The reed width and the number of dents are selected according to the desired warp sett and yarn count. For fine fabrics, technical textiles, or coarse decorative fabrics, appropriately matched reeds are used to achieve the required fabric quality.
