Definition
In textile technology, preferred orientation refers to the predominant alignment of fibers, yarns, or structural elements within a textile fabric or fiber composite. It is produced by the manufacturing process — for example, by combing, drawing, weaving, or web formation — during which fibers or filaments are oriented along a defined axis. Preferred orientation significantly influences the mechanical, physical, and optical properties of the textile, in particular tensile strength, elongation behavior, and anisotropy.
Use in the textile industry
In nonwoven production, preferred orientation (also referred to as machine direction or longitudinal direction) determines the ratio of tensile strength in the machine direction to tensile strength in the cross direction, which is relevant for technical applications such as geotextiles and filter media. In woven and knitted fabrics, preferred orientation affects shrinkage and elongation behavior as well as drapeability, factors that must be taken into account during garment manufacturing and cutting-plan layout. In composites processing, the preferred orientation of fiber plies is deliberately set in order to achieve load-appropriate mechanical properties in the finished component.
