Definition
Pile refers to the individual fibers that stand upright from the surface of a woven fabric, forming a soft, fluffy layer (also called nap). Fabrics with such a surface are referred to as pile fabrics. The pile gives the textile a soft hand and a voluminous appearance.
Use in the textile industry
Pile is characteristic of materials such as terry cloth, velvet, corduroy, velour, and fleece. It improves thermal performance and tactile comfort; however, depending on construction, it can also affect pilling and abrasion behavior.
