Natural fiber-reinforced plastic

Definition

A natural fiber-reinforced plastic is a fiber-reinforced polymer composite in which natural fibers — such as flax, hemp, or jute — are embedded in a plastic matrix (for example, a polyester or bio-based resin). The fibers provide the load-bearing, reinforcing function, while the matrix holds them together and distributes loads. The result is a lightweight, comparatively sustainable material.

Use in the textile industry

Natural fiber-reinforced plastics are increasingly used in automotive and furniture manufacturing as well as for trim and interior components, where low weight and a reduced ecological footprint are required. Their properties depend strongly on fiber type, fiber content, and fiber orientation.
