Napping machine

Definition

A napping machine is a textile finishing machine used for the mechanical surface treatment of woven fabrics and knitted fabrics. Rotating rollers fitted with card clothing or needle bars work individual fibers out of the yarn structure and raise them upright. This process, called napping, creates a more or less pronounced pile layer on the fabric surface. The result is a softer hand, improved thermal insulation, and a characteristic fluffy appearance of the textile.

Use in the textile industry

Napping machines are used primarily in the finishing of woolen and worsted woven fabrics, flannels, wool blankets, and certain cotton and blended fabrics. The intensity and number of napping passes allow targeted control of the surface character, ranging from a light raising to a dense, uniform pile. In addition to appearance, napping also influences functional properties such as heat retention and moisture management of the finished product.

A napping machine mechanically works fibers out of the yarn structure and raises them to create a pile on the fabric surface, making the textile softer and more voluminous. A shearing machine, by contrast, cuts an existing pile to a uniform height in order to achieve an even, smooth surface. Both processes can follow one another in textile finishing to achieve targeted control of both the hand and the appearance of the fabric.
