Multifilament yarn

Definition

A multifilament yarn consists of many fine filaments — that is, many continuous individual strands — bundled together. In contrast to a monofilament, which consists of a single filament, the large number of fine fibers produces a softer hand and better drape. Multifilament yarns can be processed in smooth or textured form.

Use in the textile industry

Multifilament yarns are used for apparel, lining fabrics, and a wide range of technical textiles — particularly where fine, uniform, and tear-resistant structures are required. The number and fineness of the individual filaments allow hand, luster, and tensile strength to be controlled precisely.
