Definition
Limp materials are materials that do not retain their shape independently under their own weight or under minimal external force, and that bend, fold, or drape without resistance. In the textile field, the term refers to planar structures such as woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, nonwovens, or films that possess no bending stiffness and conform to the contour of an underlying body. This property results from the interaction of fiber type, yarn structure, weave or stitch construction, and area weight. Limpness is a fundamental mechanical characteristic of textile planar structures and distinguishes them from dimensionally stable or semi-rigid technical materials.
Use in the textile industry
Limp textile planar structures are the base materials for apparel, home textiles, and many technical applications where flexible adaptation to three-dimensional shapes is required. In garment manufacturing and cutting, limpness is accounted for during processing on cutting systems, since plies cannot position themselves independently and must therefore be fixed or guided. In the field of technical textiles — such as geomembranes, airbags, or coating substrates — limpness is used deliberately or is partially eliminated through lamination, bonding, or resin impregnation.
