Heat setting

Definition

Heat setting is a thermal process applied to synthetic man-made fibers to stabilize their shape and structure. Synthetic fibers must be heat-set during pretreatment to prevent shrinkage and to avoid creasing during dyeing.

Use in the textile industry

Heat setting is used primarily on woven fabrics and knitted fabrics made from polyester, polyamide, and other synthetic fibers. The process stabilizes the dimensional stability of the textile and prevents unwanted shrinkage in subsequent wet processes such as dyeing or finishing. Heat setting is also an established process for shaping hosiery and technical textiles.

Heat setting is a thermal process for the dimensional stabilization of synthetic fibers; it uses heat to permanently fix the fiber structure. Mercerization, by contrast, is a chemical process applied exclusively to cotton: treatment with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution improves the swelling behavior and luster of the cellulose fiber. Both processes are used in pretreatment, but they work with different fiber types and mechanisms of action.
