Heat-seal paper

Definition

Heat-seal paper (also called iron-on transfer paper) is used to transfer pattern pieces accurately and precisely onto fabric. The pattern is drawn or printed onto the paper and applied to the top layer of fabric using heat. This prevents the pattern templates from shifting on the material. The technique is especially useful when cutting multiple layers stacked together, as it simplifies the transfer of the pattern.

Use in the textile industry

In the textile industry, heat-seal paper is used primarily in lay cutting, where multiple fabric layers must be cut simultaneously to exact dimensions. After ironing, the paper adheres temporarily to the top layer and stabilizes the cutting area, reducing cutting errors caused by layer shifting. It is particularly suited for shape-critical components such as collars, pockets, or structured cut parts where contour accuracy is essential.

Tissue paper is simply placed on top of the fabric or secured with pins and does not adhere on its own — it can shift during cutting. Heat-seal paper bonds reversibly to the fabric surface through the application of heat, preventing movement without mechanical fastening. For multi-layer cutting in industrial production, heat-seal paper therefore provides greater dimensional accuracy.
