Hand loom

Definition

A hand loom is a mechanical device for producing woven fabrics that is operated exclusively by manual action without any motorized drive. The weaver forms the fabric by pressing foot treadles to open the shed, inserting the weft yarn by means of a shuttle, and beating the weft into place with the reed. Hand looms are available in various configurations, including frame looms, table looms, and upright band looms, which allow different fabric widths and weave structures depending on their size and construction. Shed formation is achieved by means of shafts or simple heddle devices that selectively raise or lower the warp ends.

Use in the textile industry

Hand looms are used today primarily in home textile production, in craft workshops, and in training institutions and textile schools. They are particularly suited to the production of small quantities, custom-patterned woven fabrics, and traditional or regional textiles for which machine production is not economically or creatively appropriate. Hand looms also play a role in ethnographic contexts and in the development of prototypes or sample fabrics for industrial production.

A hand loom is operated entirely by manual action and requires no motorized drive, whereas a power loom performs the principal motions — shed formation, weft insertion, and beating — automatically by means of a motor. As a result, the power loom achieves a significantly higher production speed and is suited to large production runs, while the hand loom allows individual control of each weaving step. The hand loom is therefore oriented less toward throughput and more toward flexibility and freedom of craft design.
