Grain line

Definition

Grain line describes the direction of the warp yarns (the yarns running lengthwise in a woven fabric) in a woven fabric, or the orientation of the loops in a knitted fabric (weft-knit or warp-knit). The grain line determines how a textile can be stretched in the lengthwise and crosswise directions.

Use in the textile industry

In apparel manufacturing, correct grain line alignment during cutting is critical, as an off-grain orientation can cause distortion, uneven drape, or loss of shape in the finished garment. In technical textiles — for example in filtration or reinforcement applications — the grain line is deliberately aligned with the direction of mechanical load to achieve the required strength and elongation properties. In home textiles such as upholstery fabrics or bed linen, correct grain line alignment affects the dimensional stability and performance of the finished product.

In woven fabrics, the grain line typically refers to the orientation of the warp yarns running in the lengthwise direction of the fabric. In knitted fabrics, courses and wales define the structure, and the grain line describes the orientation of these loops. Because knitted fabrics are inherently more extensible than woven fabrics due to their interlocked loop structure, the grain line orientation has different effects on the stretch and recovery behavior of each fabric type.
