Definition
Fusible interlinings are textile or non-textile flat structures that are permanently bonded to a shell fabric by means of heat, pressure, and, where applicable, moisture. They typically consist of a base material — such as woven fabric, knitted fabric, or nonwoven — coated on one or both sides with a thermoplastic adhesive. Their primary function is to provide garments or garment components with dimensional stability, stiffness, or body, and to improve the processability of the shell fabric.
Use in the textile industry
Fusible interlinings are used most frequently in outerwear manufacturing — for example, in under-collars, cuffs, lapels, facings, and waistbands — to give these areas the required shape retention. Depending on the application requirements, interlinings are selected with different base materials and adhesive dot patterns to tailor properties such as wash resistance, hand, and stretch behavior to the intended end use. The bond between interlining and shell fabric is formed industrially using flatbed presses or belt press units under defined parameters for temperature, pressure, and time.
