Float (yarn float / float thread)

Definition

A float (also: yarn float or float thread) is a length of yarn in a woven fabric or knitted structure that runs freely across one face of the base weave system over multiple weft or warp yarns without being interlaced. It is formed when a yarn bypasses certain interlacing points and is not interlooped with the opposing yarn system. The length of a float is typically measured by the number of yarns it spans and is a key structural characteristic of many fabric weave patterns. Floats significantly influence the hand, luster, and mechanical properties of the finished textile.

Use in the textile industry

Floats are characteristic of satin and sateen weaves, where long floats on the face of the fabric produce a smooth, lustrous surface character. In Jacquard weaving and double weaving, floats are used deliberately to create pattern effects or to integrate additional yarn layers. In technical textiles — for example in certain protective textiles or spacer fabrics — float lengths are purposefully controlled to achieve specific surface properties or structural functions.

In regular yarn interlacing, warp and weft yarns change position at every interlacing point or at closely spaced binding points, creating a firm anchorage within the fabric. A float, by contrast, refers to the specific span where a yarn bridges over multiple yarns of the opposing system without being interlaced. This locally reduces structural stability but can enhance luster, softness, or pattern effects. The longer the float, the greater the surface effect — but also the greater the susceptibility to mechanical stress such as pilling or abrasion.
