Definition
A fibril is a fine, thread-like structural unit within a textile fiber, composed of parallel-arranged, bundled chain molecules (macromolecules). Fibrils form through the ordered alignment of polymer chains and constitute the microscopic foundation of fiber architecture. A distinction is made between macrofibrils, microfibrils, and elementary fibrils, which in hierarchical order substantially determine the mechanical and physical properties of the fiber.
Use in the textile industry
In the textile industry, fibril structure is particularly relevant in natural fibers such as cotton, flax, and viscose, as well as in highly oriented high-performance fibers (e.g., aramid- or cellulose-based), since the degree of fibrillation affects the strength, stiffness, and elongation behavior of the fiber. Lyocell fibers (e.g., Tencel-based) tend toward surface fibril splitting in wet conditions, which is controlled during finishing by enzymatic or mechanical treatment. The orientation of fibrils along the fiber axis correlates directly with the achievable tensile strength of the end product.
