Fiber-reinforced composite

Definition

A fiber-reinforced composite is a hybrid material consisting of two main components: reinforcing fibers embedded in a matrix — for example, a polymer or bio-based resin. The fibers carry tensile forces, while the matrix holds them in place, protects them, and transfers loads. This combination is stronger and more robust than fibers or polymer used individually.

Use in the textile industry

Fiber-reinforced composites enable components that are exceptionally lightweight yet structurally strong, and they are now indispensable in aerospace, automotive engineering, wind energy, and sporting equipment. Properties such as strength and stiffness can be precisely tailored by selecting the fiber type, fiber content, and fiber orientation.
