fiber lubrication (lubricating / aviage finishing)

Definition

Fiber lubrication refers to the application of a lubricant — also called a fiber finish, spinning lubricant, or avivage — to textile fibers or yarns in order to improve their processability. The lubricant is a fatty or oil-based preparation that softens the fibers, reduces friction between the fibers and machine components, and protects the fibers from mechanical damage. The process is typically carried out before spinning, weaving, or knitting. After processing, the lubricant is removed by washing or thermal treatment.

Use in the textile industry

Fiber lubrication is used primarily in spinning mills and weaving operations to prepare fibers such as wool, man-made fibers, or bast fibers for mechanical processing. The lubricant reduces fiber-to-fiber and fiber-to-metal friction, prevents electrostatic buildup, and promotes fiber cohesion, thereby reducing yarn breaks and quality losses during production. The application rate and formulation of the lubricant are adjusted according to fiber type, machine type, and the subsequent processing step.

Fiber lubrication is applied to fibers or yarns to improve their slippage and softness during processing in spinning or knitting operations, and is aimed primarily at the fiber itself. Sizing, by contrast, is applied to warp yarns to seal their surface and increase their abrasion resistance for the weaving process. Both are auxiliary treatments that are washed out after processing, but they serve different purposes and are applied at different points in the production process.
