Fabric inspection

Definition

Fabric inspection is a systematic visual examination of finished woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, or other textile surfaces carried out to detect and classify manufacturing defects such as weaving faults, color deviations, yarn defects, or surface flaws. The inspection is typically performed on dedicated fabric inspection tables or machines, where the fabric runs under defined lighting conditions at a uniform speed. Defective areas are marked, documented, and assessed by type and severity to enable quality grading of the fabric piece.

Use in the textile industry

Fabric inspection is a standard component of final quality control in weaving, knitting, and finishing operations. It is applied both after greige fabric production and after finishing steps such as dyeing or finishing treatments. It serves as the basis for quality classification of the fabric and thereby influences pricing, claims processing, and further processing in garment manufacturing. Recorded defect data are increasingly evaluated digitally to draw conclusions about process deviations in production.
