Definition
Drawing is a mechanical process in fiber processing in which a fiber bundle or roving is controlled-elongated between multiple pairs of rollers running at different peripheral speeds. This causes the fibers to align in the longitudinal direction and to be distributed more evenly. The fiber material is attenuated and the fibers are oriented parallel to one another, which is the prerequisite for producing a uniform, fine yarn. Drawing increases fiber parallelism, improves the evenness of the fiber strand, and has a decisive influence on the subsequent yarn properties such as tensile strength and fineness.
Use in the textile industry
In cotton and wool spinning, drawing is performed on draw frames and flyers to reduce slivers or combed tops step by step to the desired fineness. In man-made fiber production, drawing of freshly spun filaments is used to increase the molecular orientation within the fiber, thereby setting tensile strength and elongation at break to specific values. Depending on the fiber material and the end product, drawing is carried out in one or multiple stages and is often combined with heat treatment.
