Definition
Drafting refers to the mechanical process in spinning preparation by which a fiber assembly — such as a roving or sliver — is elongated by controlled tensile force while simultaneously being reduced in cross-section. The fibers are displaced relative to one another by means of differential roller speeds, causing them to align in parallel and rendering the assembly more uniform and finer. The goal of drafting is to produce the required fiber fineness and uniformity for the subsequent spinning process. The degree of elongation is expressed as the draft ratio and is a key parameter for the quality of the finished yarn.
Use in the textile industry
Drafting is a central step on drawing frames, fly frames (roving frames), and ring spinning machines, where slivers are progressively reduced to the required fineness. It is used in the processing of both natural fibers such as cotton and wool and man-made fibers. Consistent drafting control is critical for maintaining yarn count consistency and directly influences the strength and appearance of the finished yarn.
