Definition
In the apparel and textile industry, the cutting layout refers to the planned arrangement and directional orientation of pattern pieces on a fabric or fabric roll, including the position of cut lines in relation to grain, pattern repeat, and material structure. It defines how individual pattern templates are positioned on the cutting material to achieve the required quality characteristics of the finished product and to optimize material utilization. A correct cutting layout takes into account technical specifications such as grain direction, pattern repeat for patterned fabrics, and the stretch and structural properties of the material.
Use in the textile industry
In industrial apparel manufacturing, the cutting layout is planned using computer-aided CAD marker-making systems in order to minimize material waste during cutting in serial production. For patterned or directional woven fabrics, the cutting layout is particularly demanding, as stripes, plaids, or pile direction — for example in velvet — must be matched precisely piece by piece. In technical textile processing as well, such as the cutting of composite materials or coated woven fabrics, the cutting layout has a decisive influence on the mechanical properties of the final product.
