Definition
A cross-wound package is a cylindrical or conical yarn body on which the yarn is wound helically at a defined crossing angle, with successive yarn layers crossing each other so that they mutually support and stabilize one another. This winding geometry results from the combination of a rotational motion and a traverse (back-and-forth) motion during winding. Cross-wound packages are characterized by uniform yarn tension, high packing density, and good unwinding behavior. They are among the most important yarn carriers in downstream textile processing.
Use in the textile industry
Cross-wound packages are used in weaving, warp knitting, and weft knitting as direct supply packages, and as feed packages in dyeing, where their open winding structure allows uniform dye liquor flow through the yarn body. In spinning mills, cross-wound packages are produced at the end of the winding process as the final product for shipment or further processing. Their large yarn capacity compared to ring cop packages reduces the number of package changes and increases machine efficiency.
