Definition
The compound needle is the most common needle type used in warp knitting machines. It consists of two moving elements: the needle itself with its hook, and the slider, which acts as a longitudinally sliding closing element. Controlled relative movement of the slider along the needle stem opens and closes the hook area, enabling precise loop formation and knockover. Unlike the latch needle, the hook is not opened and closed by a pivoting latch but by the precisely guided slider, which allows particularly high machine operating speeds.
Use in the textile industry
Compound needles are used primarily in warp knitting machines for the production of tricot, satin, and raschel fabrics — including applications such as lingerie and sportswear fabrics, elastic narrow fabrics, and technical textiles. Their design permits high operating speeds while providing gentle yarn handling, making them especially suitable for processing fine and delicate yarns. Because the needle and slider are controlled independently, tight laying tolerances and precise stitch patterns can also be achieved.
