Textile Glossary

Charging (a machine)

Definition

Charging refers to the filling of a machine or system with material for processing.

Use in the textile industry

In the textile industry, charging is applied to a wide range of machines — for example, loading carding machines with raw fibers, inserting yarn bobbins into weaving machines, or feeding greige goods into dyeing and finishing systems. The process can be performed manually or in an automated manner. Uniform and correctly metered charging is critical for process stability and the quality of the end product. Irregularities during charging can cause defects in the woven fabric or lead to machine downtime.

Frequently asked question

Charging refers to feeding raw material or semi-finished goods into a machine or system to enable the processing operation — for example, filling a fiber storage hopper. Threading, by contrast, describes the specific operation in which a thread or yarn is drawn through the guide elements, needles, or nozzle components of a machine in order to establish its readiness for production. Both operations can be part of machine preparation, but they involve different material forms and process stages.
