Carbon fibers

Definition

Carbon fibers — also called graphite fibers — belong to the category of man-made fibers produced from synthetic polymers. A complex heat treatment process called carbonization yields nearly pure carbon, which is then spun into continuous filaments. These filaments can be processed into yarns and subsequently into textile fabrics. Carbon fibers are extremely strong and stiff at very low weight.

Use in the textile industry

Carbon fibers are used primarily in fiber-reinforced composites for aerospace, automotive engineering, wind turbines, and high-performance sporting goods. Due to the complex manufacturing process, they are comparatively expensive and are used selectively where low weight and high stiffness are critical requirements.
