Definition
Bast fibers are plant fibers obtained from multicellular fiber bundles in the bast — the inner bark layer of plant stems. The best-known bast fibers include flax (linen), hemp, jute, and ramie. They are generally high in tensile strength and low in extensibility.
Use in the textile industry
Bast fibers are processed into apparel and home textiles such as linen fabrics, as well as into ropes, sacks, and technical woven fabrics. Due to their strength and favorable ecological profile, they are also of interest as reinforcement in natural fiber-reinforced plastics.
